What is dry rot?

Dry rot is a living fungus that attacks wood. The State of California has actually dr1legislated that dry rot be considered a wood destroying organism for reporting purposes on termite reports (Section 1 item). This designation puts dry rot in the same classification as wood boring beetles and termites.

California has enough moisture throughout the year for this fungus to grow and continue it’s attack. Roof eaves, trim boards and siding are common areas of exterior infestation. The subarea of a home can be particularly at risk due to inadequate ventilation and excess moisture related to poor drainage. Annual inspections of these areas is recommended

Why should I repair dry rot on my home?

Dry rot fungus is a progressive organism. It will continue to break down the cell walls within wood until it is cracked and brittle, reducing structural integrity. Areas of dry rot often begin at end cuts of wood and spread outward from the point of origin. If left unabated, rot will continue to spread to neighboring wood dr3members and cause entire areas of a structure to be removed and rebuilt. It is not uncommon for Advantex Pest Control to replace sheets of siding and their supporting studs along with roof eaves, fascia boards and garage doors.

Early abatement of any suspected dry rot issues are highly recommended. If fungus damage can be addressed early there are alternatives to reconstructing damaged areas.
Commercial grade fungicides exist which are used by Advantex Pest Control to treat damaged wood before it looses its structural stability.

An Advantex Pest Control technician can survey your home to see if liquid fungicide can be used to abate dry rot. This can eliminate costly rebuilding of the damaged area.

If you are selling your home and are responsible for repairing the “Section 1” items, use Advantex Pest Control.

We document each stage of the repair process on supplemental or re-inspection termite reports. This can be a valuable resource at a later date should your new buyer have questions or complaintsdr4 regarding repairs done to the structure.

GENERAL CONTRACTORS OR A HANDYMAN CANNOT GENERATE THESE SUPPLEMENTAL & RE-INSPECTION REPORTS.
